Galatasaray Sports Club

Galatasaray sports clubGalatasaray Sports Club, known as GS, was founded in 1905 by the students of Galatasaray Lycée in Beyoglu district of Istanbul. It started as a football (soccer) club but then other sports branches were added, such as basketball, handball, swimming, athletics, etc. Their colors are yellow and red, their nickname is "lions".

Galatasaray won the Turkish Super League for 17 times, being 2007 - 2008 season as the last one. They also won the UEFA Cup and Super Cup in 2000, being the only Turkish team so far winning these international cups.

Today, its president is Mr. Adnan Polat. Their stadium, Ali Sami Yen Stadium which was named after the founder of the club, is located in Mecidiyekoy neighborhood of Sisli district and has a capacity of 26,750 people. Since this stadium is too old and not suitable being right in the center of the city (parking and traffic problems during games), the club is going to build a modern stadium in Seyrantepe neighborhood which will have a capacity of over 52,000 people. Until the new stadium will be completed, they'll play some of their important matches in the Olympics Stadium.
