Districts of Istanbul
With a new regulation in city planning on April 2008, Istanbul province is divided into 39 districts (was 32), each of them has a local municipality elected by the people living in the neighborhoods belonging to that district. There is also the Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) taking care of all the districts in general, having duties such as coordinating and controlling the activities of the District Municipalities, selecting solid waste disposal sites, building and maintaining city roads, bridges etc, providing burial facilities, operating a public transport system, and so on.
Below are the 39 districts of Istanbul in alphabetical order, populations are according to the beginning of 2008. The ones marked with the asterix (*) are new districts formed in 2008:
